I ran across this picture of an old quilt block, and thought how charming it was! It's enough to inspire someone to make a quilt of their own. Well, with October upon us, I figured the only appropriate color had to be PINK! It is breast cancer awareness month, and in honor of the many warriors and survivors, this quilt had to be pink.

The classic hourglass block is a great foundation piece, and has many design possibilities. In the above photo, I love the smaller hourglass in the corners of the larger block. By far my favorite part of any quilt is the weaving together of varied and intricate pieces to produce a crisp new design. However, I decided to make a straight forward hourglass block quilt.

As far as fabric goes, one can never go wrong with a simple color palette. Pink and cream was enough. The cheerful flowers add a casual friendliness against the formal plusses pattern.

All told, the process of cutting and sewing took about a week of full time attention. I always take a picture of the layout before I start sewing. I don't know what it is, but seeing it on camera allows me to recognize any mistakes or problems my eyes might ordinarily ignore. Gotta make sure those hourglasses rotate on every other block!

Finally after trimming and basting, I went with a simple heart pattern to quilt the top. It's sweet and simple. Finishing off with a pink binding for some umph, I called it done. I like it.

A pattern of this quilt in crib size and throw is available in my etsy shop here.

Thanks for stopping by!
